Born in Rome, the young soprano Sonia Ciani, studied singing at Conservatorie Santa Cecilia in Rome. At the same time she graduated in modern literature with an experimental thesis in contemporary history.

Her career began in 2008 at the Teatro Nazionale in Rome in Carmen as Frasquita. This production was recorded on CD by the Teatro dell´Opera in Rome.

She attended the Opera Studio at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under the guidance of Maestro Bruno Cagli, refining her tecnique and interpretation with Renata Scotto, Anna Vandi and with Cesare Scarton.

She was a scholarship holder at the EOS Accademy of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova where she had the opportunity to work with Rolando Panerai and Donata D´Annunzio Lombardi.
She also attended masterclasses with Marco Berti, Stefano Giannini, Alfonso Antoniozzi and Tiziana Fabbricini.

At present she perfects her repertorie and vocal tecnique with Mariella Devia.

She was finalist in several international singing competitions, such as As.Li.Co. in Como, (Singing Competiton for Young Lyric Artists of Europe), Tito Schipa Competition in Lecce and she was absolute winner of the International Lyric Competition Villa in Canto in  Verona.

In her concert activity she sang in the renowned Santa Cecilia Hall and Petrassi Hall at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome.

During the summer 2011 she was again Frasquita in Carmen at the Summer Festival Lirica in Piazza in Massa Marittima, Pescara and in San Vito al Tagliamento.

In October she made her debut  at the Carlo Felice in Genova in Die Zauberflöte as Erste Dame under the baton of Johannes Wildner in the production of Lele Luzzati with the direction of Daniele Abbado. She also was Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi under the direction of Rolando Panerai.

Recently she sang La Traviata (Violetta) in a production involving  young talents in the regional theatres of the Emilia Romagna.

In 2012 she made her debut as Queen of the Night in Mozart´s Die Zauberflöte singing in theatres like the Teatro Sociale di Como, Teatro Grande di Brescia and Teatro degli Arcimboldi  in Milan.

She was also Frasquita in Carmen at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice under the direction of Calixto  Bieito. 

In July 2012, she made her debut as Gilda in Rigoletto in Busseto.

During the season 2012 / 13 she performed Elvira in L'Italiana in Algeri  staged by As.Li.Co., then Queen of the night, Frasquita and Gilda again.

Other engagements in 2013: Tebaldo in Don Carlo in Torino (Conductor: G. Noseda; Stage director: H. De Ana) and Violetta in La Traviata at Gut-Immling Opernfestival.

Recently she debuted the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni.

In 2014 Violetta in Traviata in Bologna and Busseto.

In 2015: Queen of the night in The Magic Flute at Royal Opera House in Muscat and at Teatro Comunale in Bologna; Valencienne in The merry widow at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.

In 2016 and in 2017: Frasquita in Carmen - Teatro Comunale, Bologna; Zenobia in Palmira (Pubblia) - Teatro San Carlo in Naples; Carmen in Venice; Lucia di Lammermoor in Milan with Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali and the director Francesco Micheli; Pia de Tolomei – Pisa.

In 2018: Pia de Tolomei in Livorno, Traviata and La Dirindina by Scarlatti in Naples.

In 2019/20: Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at Teatro Verdi in Pisa and Clorinda in Cenerentola in Bologna.
